    Samuel J. Servello is an associate in the firm’s Healthcare group. Mr. Servello’s practice focuses on healthcare law and taxation of nonprofit entities. He represents hospital systems, pharmaceutical companies and insurers on transactional, regulatory, compliance and privacy matters, as well as fraud and abuse issues. Mr. Servello has extensive experience negotiating grant agreements on behalf of a grant giving foundation which funds cancer research; advising a scientific research consortium regarding a variety of transactional matters, clinical trials and issues relating to exemption from taxation; and assisting tax-exempt organizations obtain recognition of tax-exempt status, maintain tax-exempt status and advise on unrelated business taxable income issues, including income from conducting clinical research. He also monitors the actions of tax-exempt entities and their directors, employees and agents and advises on the application of the intermediate sanction and excess benefit rules as well as corporate governance.

    Mr. Servello is presently the Chair of the Health Law Committee of the New York City Bar Association. He is also an active member on a joint taskforce with the Public Health Law Committee of the New York State Bar Association regarding the cost drivers of healthcare in the State of New York, working with the New York State Departments of Insurance and Health. Through his efforts with the Health Law Committee of the New York City Bar Association, Mr. Servello continues to be involved with cutting edge issues that arise in the area of health law in the State of New York.

    In February 2008, he was the principal organizer and moderator of the Symposium on Access to Healthcare in the State of New York, which brought together key decision makers from the Governor’s office, the New York State Assembly and Senate, to discuss the issue of access.

    As a volunteer at Beth Israel Medical Center, Mr. Servello serves as a member of Beth Israel’s On-Call Disaster Team in case of a large-scale disaster.
